SELF-DOLL

IS AN INFLATABLE SCULPTURE

Self-Doll, Self-portrait, photographed in Ningbo, China, at the doll factory, 2011 / 2025, EasyDot-print, 200 × 150 cm, museum-edition: 1/1

In 2006, I wrapped myself in paper for the first time, formed a doll out of this shell that was labelled with “She loves me? She loves me not!”. Later, I carried an inflatable plastic sex doll around in my handbag, ironically marked it “MYSPACE”, after the popular social network of the time, so that I always had a sculpture at hand that I could simply blow up when the opportunity arose. As this blurred the line between art and pornography, the dolls repeatedly caused scandals and were often removed from art events.
