A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG WOMAN

Supermodels? Self-portraits 1995 - 1999

“The object of the artist is the creation of the beautiful. What the beautiful is is another question.”

James Joyce

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, 1916

In 1995, I became an artist because I no longer wanted to be a model. The moment I changed sides and stood behind the camera I reversed the gaze: on myself, on the world and on seeing in general. As a young woman and artist, I suddenly found myself in an art history that for centuries has seen and recognized women as muses and objects, but rarely as creative producers. From that moment on, I would slip into the most diverse roles, shattering clichés and defying expectations. My search for identity spares no one, least of all myself.

For the exhibition SO WHAT! (H1 Kunsthalle, Museen Augsburg, 2025), 40 images from the series A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman (1995–1999 / 2022), which consists of 100 works in total, were labelled with my texts.
