stage候台BACK is an art space dedicated to experimental projects founded by German artist Susanne Junker in April 2008 in Shanghai, China.

In June 2011 stage候台BACK will move to M50 to start a collaboration with Eastlink Gallery. Eastlink is one of Shanghai's most established galleries and has been showing important Chinese contemporary art for more than 10 years. stage候台BACK is pleased to announce the continuation of its international program within this beautiful new location and aims for an even more intense exchange with art from all over the world.

Susanne has been traveling to China since 2004 and observed the growing urban culture in Shanghai as well as the fast forward moving Chinese art scene. Her motive is grounded in cultural and intellectual exchange between the East and the West. Apart from the importance of education, the program concentrates on discoveries of artists that show intriguing plates and disturbing displays to create strong reactions from the visiting audience. stage候台BACK's link to an international dialog is obvious. Inviting controversial "German art" and hosting e.g. Thomas Palme's first solo show in mainland China in 2009, as well as Shanghai based foreign artists like American sound artist Terence Lloren. stage候台BACK endeavors to add to the diversity of the relatively homogenous art scene in China today.

stage候台BACK will collaborate with artists of all mediums from abroad as well as local based artists. Cultural institutions should have their place at stage候台BACK as well as private owned galleries who are looking for an exchange.

stage候台BACK is located in the center of Shanghai in the newish underground artist enclave at 696 Weihai Lu, an old building that at one time was an opium den and warehouse built in the 1930's. About 40 artist studios and six new and emerging galleries are located in 696 Weihai Lu.

stage候台BACK has been official partner for the of Saxony-Anhalt´s presentation at the German Pavilion "balancity" during the WORLD EXPO 2010. stage候台BACK has realized several projects sponsored by the "Abteilung für Kultur und Bildung" (Goethe Institut) Shanghai. stage候台BACK is operating as a non profit and non governmental institution. stage-back.org
